It has been written Joseph Stewart married Keziah Brewer. I have not found a marriage record for them. The marriage records for Anson County, North Carolina were lost in a fire, if they were married there.
All census information was retrieved online from Ancestry.com.
The 1850 United States Federal Census for Union County, North Carolina shows the following for Joseph:
Dwelling Number 1211
Joseph Stewart Age 57 Farmer
Keziah Stewart Age 58
Nancy Stewart Age 17
Maria Stewart Age 16
Martha Stewart Age 15
Culpepper Stewart Age 13 Farmer
According the this 1850 census Joseph would have been born about 1793, and most likely in Anson County, NC judging by the time frame of the land transactions for his father, William.
The next Dwelling Number, 1212, is Joseph’s son, Coleman Stewart, age 21, Farmer, and his wife, Jane, age 17.
This census also shows Joseph’s oldest son, (John) William Stewart, Farmer, age ??, his wife, Mary, age 22, and daughter, Minerva J, age 9 months. The Dwelling Number is 1221. Sometime during this decade John William Stewart, Mary, and Mirerva J moved to Mississippi before settling in what is now Jacks Creek, Chester County, Tennessee. I will show more for them under John William Stewart’s page.
The 1860 United States Federal Census shows an apparent second marriage for Joseph. The census lists the following:
Dwelling Number 538
Joseph Stewart Age 68 Male Farmer
Martha Age 36 Female Domestic
John Age 17 Male Farmer
William Age 14 Male
George Age 11 Male
Francis Age 7 Male
Caroline Age 1 Female
Joseph’s will was dated April 21, 1866, and lists his wife Martha, six children being John W. Stewart, Coleman Stewart, Nancy Godwin, Jemina Curlee, Martha Nance, Culpepper Stewart, and stepson, William H. Bryant. (I will insert the will at a later time in a new post.)
The census does not show the correct last names for the step children as Bryant, although his will explains this as he mentioned his stepson, William Bryant. After Joseph’s death, it appears Martha married again to a Thomas Birmingham as shown in the 1870 census. The census shows Thomas Birmingham, age 30, Farmer, Martha, age 45, and Francis Bryant, Male, age 17. Francis was listed in the 1860 census as living with Joseph and Martha, but indicated the last name was Stewart.
The Marriage Book for 1843-1899, located in the Union County Public Library in Monroe, NC documents Martha Stewart’s marriage to Thomas Birmingham on December 6, 1866 by Esq. B. A. Austin. A copy of the Marriage Index for Union County, NC, also from Ancestry, is shown below.
The same Marriage Book shows the following marriages for Joseph’s children:
“Coalman” Stewart to Milindy J. Ross on September 4, 1849. Bondsman-Russel Helms
Nancy Stewart to Morris Godwin on November 5, 1852. Bondsman-Madison Godwin, and J.W. Smith, JP.
Martha Stewart to Henry Nance on December 31, 1854 by Esq. E. Williams.
Culpepper Stewart to Sarah Jane Nance on December 6, 1857 by Esq. E. Williams.
Jemina Stewart to Calvin Curlee on December 13, 1857 by Esq. R. Staton.
I do not have a date of marriage for John William Stewart who married Mary Austin. They are my Paternal Great Great Grandparents. Culpepper and Sarah Jane Stewart are my Maternal Great Great Grandparents. My parents were unaware of this when they were married.
Where did Joseph Stewart die? Did he die in Arkansas or in N.C.?
Joseph died in Union County, NC in 1866. I have notes from the Stewart Clan Magazine Tome F in March 1953, Volume XXX, Number 9 where the Editor, George Edson, gathered the information from the Union County records.”Joseph made his will April 21, 1866 naming his son Coleman Stewart executor…probated at the July term of court 1866.” I thought I had a copy of his will, but I can not find it. Joseph was listed in the 1860 census for Union County, NC, and his widow, Martha, remarried at the end of 1866 in Union County, NC.
Greg:
Do you know anything else about his widow Martha and her sons?
I believe Martha married Thomas Birmingham in Union County, NC in late 1866. The marriage index shows the marriage of Thomas Birmingham and Martha Stewart as being in Book 1 Page 161. I’ve not researched Martha very well, but I’ve also seen the death certificate for William H. Bryant whom I believe is Martha’s son. He died in October 1928 and is buried at New Home Church in Anson County, NC. I do not know anything about her other children.
Ellis Pernay is my great grandfather and Coleman Stewart is my gg grandfather. Do you know where Joseph was born and when? Also, what is the correct spelling for Malinda (Milindy)Ross? Greg, Thank you so much for the information 🙂 This is sooo exciting !
Nita
I do not know where Joseph was born. Judging by the census he was born around 1793. If that is correct then he most likely was born in Anson County, NC. The earliest land grant I found referencing his father, William, is in 1790 from the State of North Carolina. It is speculated William moved from Virginia along with others including Thomas Griffin, who was a Revolutionary War Veteran from VA. So right now it is a toss up as to where Joseph was born.
Unfortunately I don’t know the exact spelling for Coleman’s wife. I also noticed the different spellings for her on the census.
I wish I knew more!
HI Gregg! Are there any existing photos of Coleman Stewart and and his brothers?
Nita
Hi Nita,
I do not have any photos of Coleman or the brothers. There is a photograph on the Union County Library website at http://history.union.lib.nc.us/heritageroompictures/00452.htm I see a man on the front row, third from the right, kneeling on his left knee. It appears the man is missing his right arm. Coleman’s right arm was amputated at the shoulder from a gunshot wound received during the Civil War. The photograph is of the surviving 48th Regiment of the NC Volunteers, the unit Coleman was a member. I don’t know if this is him as others had limbs amputated as well, but it is a possibility, I think.
Hi,
My grandfathers name was Marcus H. Stewart(married Elizabeth Parker), my great grandfathers was George Benton Stewart(married Alma Sinclair), and my Great-Great Grandfathers name was James “Jimmy” Russell Stewart(married Lydia Ross) All from Marshville, NC. It’s a shot in the dark, but was hoping if someone may have some info on these names.
Armon,
What type of information are you looking for?
Greg
Just wondering if maybe these names have any relations to any of the Stewarts on this page, considering they seem to have been in the same area at the same times, also if maybe anyone had any pics or knowledge of the Stewarts I mentioned as I don’t know much about them at all.
Thank you.
Hi Armon,
James R. married Lydia Staton. You may have had a typo when you typed “Lydia Ross.” She is the daughter of Ennis Staton and Sarah Ross. Yes, James R. is related to these Stewarts! His father is Coleman Stewart. Coleman is the brother to my GG Grandfather, Culpepper. Coleman served in the Civil War, and had his right arm amputated due to a gunshot wound.
I do not have any photographs of these folks nor know much more about them. I only suspect the tintype photo of the man and woman on the first page is Joseph Stewart, father of Coleman and Culpepper.
Good luck, cousin!
Greg
Hello Greg,
Thanks so much for that info! You have done a tremendous job with this site and I am quite grateful for it… While doing my own bit of research, I’ve done some reading on Culpepper and of Coleman. At first, I thought Culpepper was James Russells father but now I realize it was Coleman or “Coalman” the whole time! Do you know where Coleman is buried?
I understand that Culpepper, and his wife were buried at Pleasant Hill, along with some other Stewarts. The sunday school pics posted, do you know the year they were taken perhaps? Because, in one pic, it looks as though it could contain John F. Stewart and his wife and kids…
Hi Armon,
Coleman is buried at Union Grove Primitive Baptist Church on Morgan Mill Road (Hwy 200 North) in Monroe, Union County, NC.
I’m not sure when the Sunday School photographs were taken. They appear to be between 1900 to 1912.
Greg
There are grave photos for most of these Stewarts on Find a Grave.
Yes, thank you missjanenc..I’ve actually visited all the grave sites, as I live not too far from them..
Have you come across an Alfred Merrill Stewart in your research? He died in Anson co in October, 1841. His wife Catherine Richardson Stewart later took the children and went to west Tennessee with the Preslar and Little families. I have been looking for his parents, any family members and a gravesite for years. Also looking for her family, the Richardson’s. I know there is a Richardson’s Creek in Anson Co. I have been to her grave in TN. With help, I located the Stewart Cem. in Chester Co TN this past fall and added the photos on findagrave if any of you are related to that group.
Hi Nancy! The photographs you did for the Stewart Family Cemetery were my requests on Find A Grave! I can’t thank you enough for those. I was out there in the mid 1970’s with my father and brother visiting the Plunk’s. They are my grandmother’s family. I was not interested in genealogy at that time, but do have some photographs I did at Johnson’s Crossroads cemetery. For some reason we did not go to the Stewart Family Cemetery. I’ve not researched Alfred Merrill Stewart, but Joseph’s son John William Stewart left in the 1850’s with his family and move west, eventually living in Chester County, TN. Maybe he moved at the same time with the Preslar and other families? John is the great grandfather of my Dad, Max Junior Stewart. John’s brother, Culpepper, is the great grandfather of my mother. Culpepper remained in New Salem, Union County, NC where he was born and raised. I began looking for Joseph Stewart’s grave site when I began my genealogical journey. It is doubtful I will ever find it as many grave markers were destroyed to open up land for farming. I will certainly let you know if I come across anything relating to the Alfred Merrill Stewart family.
Thank you again. Greg Stewart
Catherine Richardson Stewart
Catherine and the children made the journey to TN 1853-54. So your John William may well have been in the same group or at least just ahead or followed along just after. For whatever reason several left Anson county in the 1850’s. Charles Austin left before 1860 as he’s in MS censusi 1860.
Your John William Stewart’s wife, Mary Austin is the sister to my gg-grandmother Martha Austin Brewer, daughters of Charles and Elizabeth Nance Austin. That relationship is what caused me to search for the Stewart Cem. Unable to find Charles’ grave, probably in McNairy Co. TN, I wanted to find the ones for his children. That and the hope John William would be related to my Alfred Merrill Stewart. Unfortunately that last part didn’t pan out….
I have been working on my daughter-in-law’s Stewart Family line and proved them back to Joseph Stewart through his son Coleman Stewart- Thomas Coleman Stewart & Lucy Helms-Robert Glenn Stewart & Nan Juanita Schachner-Richard Lee Stewart & Shelly Hargett. Wish I had found your blog before I spent all that time looking for Joseph Stewart b. 1793!! But guess it was a good thing to prove the line myself. I have a photo off of Ancestry for George Marshall Stewart b. 1855. He looks remarkably like the Tintype you posted.
Hello Greg! I am researching my daughter-in-laws Stewart family. Her line is Richard Lee Stewart-Robert Glenn Stewart b. 1903-Thomas Coleman Stewart b. 1865-Coleman Stewart b. 1829-Joseph Stewart b. 1793 all b. North Carolina. The Tintype of the man & woman you shared; he looks remarkably like a photo of George Marshall Stewart b. 1855 son of Coleman & Melinda Jane Ross! It won’t let me past the comparison here- how can I do that?
I you would like to email me the photograph I will be happy to upload it for you. I’ve seen a photograph of George Marshall Stewart regarding the town of Wingate, NC and Wingate University. I am very interested to see it.
